We are delighted to publish this unique climbing guidebook. The decision to make this a joint venture with Vertebrate publishing has, in my opinion, been a great success. The design by Rosie Edwards is beyond my wildest expectations.

My motivation to write this book is twofold. First, to celebrate a milestone: Malc Baxter has produced guidebook illustrations for sixty years. Secondly, my hope is this book will champion what is a Mecca of quarried gritstone and a great place to climb. With four quarries, there is truly something for everyone. In this book I describe a selection of the finest lines on quarried grit covering all four venues: Wilton One, Two, Three and Four.

The book includes:

60 boulder problems and 189 trad routes across all four quarries.

Fifteen full page line drawings and one spread over two pages.

Four additional half page annotated topos, with sixteen topos in total.

Drone images by Martin Simpson.

Twenty additional photographs which include work by Craig Bailey, Paul Evans, Mike Hutton and Julia Uttley.

An illustrated narrative about Malc’s career and a bibliography of the books to which he has made a contribution.

The book also includes sections on access, Wilton Fest, Current definitive guidebooks, an informative introduction and short piece about the author.

Jon Barton of Vertebrate publishing wrote, ‘this special edition guide exclusively employs diagrams and not photo topos to commemorate artist Malc Baxter’s sixty years creating pen and ink drawings for many of the finest climbing guidebooks ever produced.

For many years climbers have been told that the future of guidebooks is the app, data at the touch of a screen, updated, personalised, served up 24/7. And one day we will indeed see the last guidebook published. This won’t be the last but, if it is, let it celebrate all that is great in the fine tradition of British guidebook publishing.’
