Kangchenjunga expedition — a set of five original foolscap letters by the 1955 Kangchenjunga expedition secretary A.W. (Alf) Bridge to John Cane, Honorary Secretary of the Fell & Rock Climbers Club. Kangchenjunga the world’s third highest mountain, was first climbed on 25 May 1955 by Joe Brown and George Band as part of a nine man British expedition, led by Charles Evans. A.W. Bridge was introduced to Evans by Sir John Hunt Chairman of the expedition.●SOLD
An extract from the book, Kangchenjunga — The Untrodden Peak, Charles Evans, 1956, Hodder & Stoughton, page 10, ‘In August 1954, A.W. Bridge and I met to discuss plans. Himself a climber, he agreed to look after the secretarial work of the expedition. … we listed what we should need, and Alf Bridge went ahead to see we got it.’
6th April 1955: Bridge writes, ‘warning about confidentiality and progress so far. ‘The expedition survived the journey across India … we are now 4 days out of Darjeeling, and have dropped westwards into Nepal … All goods have reached their destination …’
14th April 1955: Bridge writes, ‘Our first week at our acclimatisation base, Ramser, has been spent partly in reconnaissance of a route up to the Yalung Glacier.’ The letter informs of bad weather and describes Joe Brown climbing a boulder at ‘crack camp’, named as such due to the large crack found within the boulder.
Three of the five Kangchenjunga letters
16th May 1955: Bridge writes, ‘All is going to plan’. This despite heavy snow fall in the area. Base camp had been moved to a more sheltered position 300ft above the glacier. ‘Camp 1 and 2 had been established and loads were being ferried … Charles Evans and Joe Brown have been alone at camp 2 for a few days …’ Also news that MacKinnon and Mather attempted to climb Yalung Peak but failed.’
27th May 1955: Bridge writes, ‘Continued good progress, the letter quotes Charles Evans on the technicalities of the route. The letter describes activity on both the 4th and 13th of May 1955 to a height of 25,200ft at camp five. ‘It is not proposed to announce now the names taking the various roles involved, because everyone here feels very much that this is an expedition effort …’
8th June 1955: Bridge writes a letter confirming a successful first ascent, ‘In this great achievement Charles Evans and all members of the expedition are very conscious of all the help and experience which has been so generously given by all our contributing firms.’
Five letters, these have been inserted loosely in a custom made acid free folder for safe keeping. I also list two copies of, Kangchenjunga — The Untrodden Peak, Charles Evans, 1956, Hodder & Stoughton. Five letters, foolscap VG (-) with minor foxing. All signed by Bridge, £150.00 the set.●SOLD

I am currently writing a bibliography of UK climbing guides published in journals. With this in mind, I am looking for copies of the more obscure climbing club publications; especially long runs.
If you own climbing journals, you might consider swapping, selling or allowing me access. I do have most of the SMC, F&RCC, CC, Yorkshire Ramblers Club and The Rucksack Club Journals. If you are in a position to help please get in touch:

Books from the collection of Mr Geoff Millburn
BMC Honorary Member, Geoff Milburn has devoted a lifetime to collecting mountain literature and amassed one of the best collections of UK climbing guide books in the world. The hyperactive ex-Guidebook Editor Climbers’ Club and BMC Peak District guides produced over twenty guide books, a figure I doubt we will see from any individual again. Mr Milburn had a major sale of books in 2013 and in May 2017, I purchased the remainder of his collection including his guide books, amassed over sixty years. Author of several narratives his energy and enthusiasm is rarely seen in men half his age, his knowledge of UK climbing history second to none! I have kept the bulk of the guide books together, including more than twenty copies once owned by legendry bibliographer George Bridge. The number of rare and hard to get guides in the collection took my breath away, with many copies so scarce I will probably never see another. A small number of books from the Milburn collection are surplus to requirements so I offer them for sale.
Geoff Milburn edited guide books, NW069, NW079, NW075, NW076, NW083, NW086, NW095, NW105, PD048, PD050, PD051, PD052, PD053, PD054, PD056, PD059, PD063, PD069, PD070, LC031 and LC032
